-At the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens in 2004, women competed in 26 sports (out of 28) and 135 events, or 45% of the total number of events. Women represented 40.7% of the total number of athletes competing, a record number. This progress on the field is also the result of various national sports policies and of National Olympic Committees taking advantage of Olympic Solidarity programmes and scholarships to improve their performances
-The participation of women in the Olympic Movement at all levels has changed considerably: it fully represents the values of our modern society worldwide
2. History of the Qatar Women's Sport Committee
The Qatar Women's Sports Committee (QWSC) was proclaimed in the year 2001 by HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Heir Apparent of Qatar, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (the QOC) and Member of the International Olympic Committee.

The QWSC was established in accordance with the decision No (3) for 2000 taken by Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser the President of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs.
With the creation of the Committee, Qatar's young women are being provided with more opportunities to pursue their sporting interests to competitive levels.
-The establishment of the QWSC was a major milestone in the women's sports movement in Qatar. It heralded the opening of several women sports centers where women's sporting talent can be discovered and developed under the guidance of specialist female coaches in all fields of sport
-The QWSC started to participate in international competitions; and made a landmark accomplishment by the election of Dr. Anissa Al-Hitmi as Vice-President of the Islamic Women Union (Asia region)
-It was during the 1970s that the increase of women participating in the Games became more significant, reflecting the increased awareness of the positive contribution that sport can make to the well-being of women and the development of women's sports clubs and associations around the world
