Manama: The 3rd Asian Youth Games kick off tomorrow in the Kingdom of Bahrain, with the official opening ceremony set for Wednesday. The Games will run until October 31, bringing together more than 5,000 athletes from 45 National Olympic Committees across Asia.
Team Qatar will be represented by 67 athletes competing in 16 sports, including athletics, badminton, 3x3 basketball, equestrian (show jumping), golf, judo, jiu-jitsu, cycling, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, wrestling, volleyball, beach volleyball, and boxing. Female athletes will compete in four sports: athletics, badminton, volleyball, and beach volleyball.
Qatar’s men’s volleyball team will be the first to compete, facing China tomorrow in Group B, which also includes Iran. The squad features Ahmed Taleb, Dahami Al-Ruwaili, Ghanem Al-Basti, Khalid Abdullah, Tamim Al-Awad, Hamad Ibrahim, Mazen Belorosi, Abdullah Al-Shaiba, Omar Awamleh, Badr Al-Zanari, Abdulrahman Ali, and Nawaf Al-Shammari.
The volleyball competition includes 12 teams divided into four groups: Group A (Bahrain, Pakistan, Mongolia), Group B (Qatar, Iran, China), Group C (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia), and Group D (Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Indonesia).
Meanwhile, the Qatar women’s volleyball team will begin their campaign tomorrow against Iran in Group A, which also features Bahrain. The squad includes Hanaa Al-Khater, Marwa Abdulaziz, Fatima Touzri, Tasneem Ali, Lamees Al-Salman, Fatima Mahrez, Wajdan Al-Waleed, Bandah Ibrahim, Lujain Mahmoud, Dana Saber, Al-Mayassa Dhiab, Aisha Al-Alawi, and Maryam Mohoub.
Qatar’s beach volleyball teams also arrived in Bahrain today. The men’s team includes Ahmed Ziyad and Moussa Al-Khair, while the women’s team consists of Celine Mahmoud and Sewar Al-Asal.
The Asian Youth Games feature 26 sports and 253 events, with athletes competing for 1,677 medals—including 505 gold, 503 silver, and 669 bronze. The competitions will take place across three main venues: Isa Sports City, Khalifa Sports City, and the Bahrain International Exhibition Center, along with several other supporting facilities.
Head of Qatar’s volleyball delegation Saeed Jumaa Al-Hitmi described the team’s participation as an important step in developing the next generation of Qatari players.
“We’re aware of the challenge ahead, especially with strong teams like China, the Asian champions, and Iran, the world champions, in our group,” Al-Hitmi said.
“This tournament is a valuable opportunity for our players to gain experience and test themselves against top-level competition. Our goal is to represent Qatari volleyball in the best possible way and demonstrate that we have promising talents capable of competing with the best.”
He added that the team’s preparation phase went well, expressing full confidence in the players’ readiness to deliver strong performances throughout the competition.
