Ljubljana - The Qatari handball team commenced training today at their overseas camp in Slovenia, as part of preparations for the 29th Men’s Handball World Championship, scheduled to be held in Croatia, Denmark, and Norway from January 14 to February 2.
As part of their training, the team will play two friendly matches during the camp. They will face Slovenia on Tuesday, followed by a match against Algeria on Thursday, marking their final warm-up games before the tournament begins.
Last week, the Qatari team played three friendly matches in Doha. They secured two victories against Argentina, winning the first match 30-25 and the second 30-27, before narrowly losing the third match to Bahrain with a score of 27-28.
Qatar has been drawn into Group C of the World Championship, alongside France, Austria, and Kuwait. Their campaign will kick off with a match against France on January 14, followed by a game against Austria on January 16, before concluding the group stage with a clash against Kuwait on January 18.
The tournament features 32 teams divided into eight groups: Group A: Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Switzerland. Group B: Denmark, Italy, Algeria, Tunisia. Group C: Qatar, France, Austria, Kuwait. Group D: Hungary, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Guinea. Group E: Norway, Portugal, Brazil, USA. Group F: Sweden, Spain, Japan, Chile. Group G: Slovenia, Iceland, Cuba, Cape Verde. Group H: Egypt, Croatia, Argentina, Bahrain. The top three teams from each group will advance to the main round.
This will be Qatar’s 10th appearance in the World Championship, following previous participations in Portugal (2003), Tunisia (2005), Germany (2007), Spain (2013), Qatar (2015), France (2017), Germany and Denmark (2019), Egypt (2021), and Poland and Sweden (2023). Their best result came in 2015 when they finished as runners-up during the tournament hosted in Qatar.
Qatar qualified for this year’s World Championship by finishing at the top of Group A in the main round of the 21st Asian Men’s Handball Championship, held in Bahrain in January 2024. They went on to claim their sixth consecutive Asian title by defeating Japan in the final with a score of 30-24
