DOHA - The 30th edition of the World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender tournament will kick off Monday at Lusail International Hall and will run until January 11.
The event features over 180 male and female players from more than 42 countries, including top-ranked athletes in five categories.
The organizing committee has completed all necessary logistical and organizational arrangements in the past days to ensure the success of the event, showcasing Qatar's renowned organizational capabilities.
The main draw will take place from January 8 to 11, leading to the finals. The competition includes five categories: Men's and Women's Singles, Men's and Women's Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.
Notable participants include world number 3 Tomokazu Harimoto from Japan, world number 10 Patrick Franziska from Germany, world number 19 Aruna Quadri from Ivory Coast, and world number 22 Jiang Jing from China.
In the Women's category, top-ranked players include world number 5 Hina Hayata from Japan, world number 6 Miwa Harimoto, world number 11 Qian Tianyi from China, world number 13 Bernadette Szocs from Romania, and world number 18 Bruna Takahashi from Brazil.
Deputy Director of the tournament, Ahmed Khalil Al Mohannadi, expressed his delight that Qatar is hosting the first WTT event of the new year, marking the start of a season filled with exciting and competitive table tennis events. He emphasized the expertise of Qatar Table Tennis Federation in organizing tournaments, ensuring this year's event will live up to expectations, similar to previous tournaments.
Al Mohannadi noted that the organizing committee has provided excellent facilities for the players, including top-quality accommodations, meals, and a dedicated training hall at Lusail. He also highlighted the world-class sports facilities in Qatar, particularly Lusail Hall, which will host the World Table Tennis Championship from May 17 to 25.
The competition also serves as a strong rehearsal for the upcoming World Championship, both in terms of the competitive level and the organizational aspects. Additionally, Qatar will host three more tournaments from January 27 to February 8, including the Men's and Women's Federation Cups, a Contender Tournament, and a Youth Contender Tournament, all of which will take place at the Women's Sports Committee Hall, providing another opportunity to refine preparations for the World Championship.
Al Mohannadi concluded by mentioning that Qatar's national players will participate in the tournament, with 7 men's players Mohammed Abdulwahab, Abdullah Abdulwahab, Ahmed Eid Qarni, Ruwad Al Nasser, Abdulaziz Al Abad, Issa Al Haddad, and Youssef Abdelzaher and 3 women's players Aya Magdy, Maryam Ali, and Serena Sheikh.
