Muscat: Team Qatar continued its impressive run at the 3rd GCC Beach Games in Muscat, Oman, clinching five medals on Thursday — two gold and three bronze — as the event heads into its final day. Over 300 athletes from the six GCC countries are competing in the regional multi-sport event.
In beach volleyball, Qatar’s star duo Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan struck gold after defeating the host nation Oman in the final with straight sets, 21–14 and 21–19. The Qatari pair dominated the tournament, going undefeated throughout. They topped Group A with wins over Oman (3-0) and Kuwait (2-0), then defeated Saudi Arabia (2-0) in the quarterfinals and overcame another Omani team (2-0) in the semifinals.
Bahrain secured the bronze medal in beach volleyball after beating Oman in the third-place match.
Qatar also added three medals in the Tent Pegging (equestrian) events. Rashid Fahad Al Dosari claimed gold in the individual peg competition, while teammate Ali Hamad Al Athba secured bronze in the same event. This marks Al Athba’s second medal of the Games, having previously won gold in the individual lance competition earlier in the week.
In the team Mu’allaqat (hanging ring & peg) event, Qatar earned bronze. The team — made up of Faisal Al Hajri, Rashid Al Dosari, Ali Al Athba, and Ibrahim Al Hammadi — finished behind gold medalists Oman and silver medalists Saudi Arabia.
In sailing, young Qatari talent Tamim Khalid Shams claimed bronze in the Optimist Junior Individual event. The UAE’s Zayed Omar Al Hosni took gold, while Oman’s Mohammed Ziad Al Qassimi won silver.
Qatar’s overall medal tally at the Games now stands at seven: three gold, one silver, and three bronze.
Looking ahead, Qatari swimmers Tamim Mohammed Al Hamaida and Mohammed Aziz Ismail will compete in the 5km open water long course race on Friday — the final day of the Games — as they aim to add to Qatar’s medal haul.
