DOHA – Team Qatar made a stunning start to the 18th edition of the Youth Athletics Championship, clinching three gold medals on the opening day of the competition, held at the Qatar Sports Club track and field stadium.
The regional event features youth teams from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and the UAE, and will run through May 7.
The gold rush was led by standout performances from Ibrahim Zakaria in the pole vault, Salah Younes in the 100m sprint, and Hatem Humaid in the 800m.
Ibrahim Zakaria soared to victory in the pole vault, clearing a height of 4.90 meters to secure gold. Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Al-Qudaihi took silver with a mark of 4.70 meters, while Qatar’s Younes Al Baloushi claimed bronze at 4.50 meters.
In the 100m dash, Salah Younes sprinted to gold with a blistering time of 10.38 seconds. Saudi sprinter Saud Haqwi earned silver in 10.67 seconds, followed by compatriot Baddah Al-Bishi, who secured bronze with 10.73 seconds.
Qatar’s Aafi Al-Shammari added to the medal tally with a silver in the javelin throw, recording a distance of 41.86 meters. The gold in that event went to Saudi Arabia’s Musaad Al-Asaimi, who threw 51.52 meters.
Meanwhile, Hatem Humaid stormed to victory in the 800m final, clocking 1:48.86 to claim gold. Kuwait’s Abdulatif Faisal finished second in 1:51.58, while the UAE’s Mohammed Al-Masaabi took bronze with a time of 1:52.67.
The championship continues today on Monday with six finals scheduled, including the men’s discus throw, high jump, 3000 meters, 110m hurdles, 200m, and the 4x100m relay.
