Team Qatar finishes Runner-Up at GCC Youth Athletics Championship

DOHA  – Team Qatar delivered a strong performance to claim second place at the 18th edition of the GCC Youth Athletics Championship, which concluded on Tuesday at the Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha. The tournament brought together five national teams: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Oman.

Qatar finished with a total of 173 points, coming in behind Saudi Arabia, who topped the standings with 213 points. Kuwait secured third place with 131 points, while Oman and the UAE placed fourth and fifth with 45 and 32 points respectively.

Over three days of fierce competition, athletes battled it out across 20 track and field events, showcasing rising talents from across the Gulf. Qatar’s athletes shone brightly, collecting an impressive 18 medals—9 gold, 4 silver, and 5 bronze—but ultimately fell short in the points tally, with Saudi Arabia edging ahead thanks to a higher medal count of 23 medals, capitalizing on the tournament’s points-based ranking system.

Kuwait earned their third-place finish with 13 medals, while the Omani and Emirati teams also delivered commendable efforts.

Speaking after the awards ceremony, Mohammed Issa Al-Fadala, Chairman of the Championship’s Supreme Organizing Committee and President of the Qatar Athletics Federation, praised the level of competition and the smooth organization of the event.

“We witnessed a high standard of competition from all participating teams,” he said. “Each delegation gave its all, and the results reflect a positive and satisfying outcome for everyone involved.”

He congratulated the top-performing teams and affirmed that the championship was a success on both competitive and organizational fronts, reinforcing the region’s growing stature in youth athletics.
