Manama: Qatar’s national volleyball team made a strong start in the inaugural West Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship with a dominant straight-sets victory over Saudi Arabia, winning 25-18, 25-19, 25-14. The tournament, hosted in the Kingdom of Bahrain, features eight national teams competing from July 17 to 27.
Team Qatar is placed in Group B alongside Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Kuwait. Following their opening win, they will face Oman on Friday before concluding the group stage against Kuwait on Monday.
Group A includes host nation Bahrain, the UAE, Jordan, and Lebanon. The competition is organized by the West Asia Volleyball Association as part of its strategy to strengthen regional engagement in the sport, foster talent development, and establish a sustainable platform for continental tournaments.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s beach volleyball teams wrapped up their participation in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Beach Tour Pingtung Open, after exiting in the knockout stages.
Qatar 1, featuring Saif Al Majid and Mahmoud Essam, reached the quarterfinals but were eliminated after a 0-2 loss to Japan 2 (Takahashi and Ikeda), with set scores of 15–21 and 17–21.
Qatar 2, composed of Mehdi Samoud and Mahmoud Essam, saw their run end in the second round. They competed in Group E during the group stage, putting on a strong display, but fell short of qualifying for the final rounds.
Despite the early exits, both Qatari teams showcased solid performances, reflecting the steady progress of beach volleyball in the country. Their efforts also offered the technical staff valuable insights to enhance preparations for future tournaments.
