Qatar U-16 Basketball Team to Face Tunisia in Arab Championship

Cairo: Qatar’s under-16 basketball team will wrap up their preliminary round campaign at the 22nd Arab Championship, currently taking place in Cairo, Egypt, with a matchup against Tunisia on Friday, August 15, 2025. Tip-off is set for 5:00 PM at Hall 3 of the Cairo International Stadium complex.

The tournament features six teams — Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt — competing in a single round-robin format. The top two teams will progress to the final on August 17, while the third- and fourth-place teams will contest the bronze medal.

Team Qatar head into the clash following a 35-57 loss to Algeria, where the Algerians took control early with quarter leads of 12-5, 15-7, and 14-3. Despite a stronger showing in the final quarter (20-16), Qatar were unable to close the gap.

This tournament appearance reflects the Qatar Basketball Federation’s strategy to invest in youth development and lay the foundations for a competitive national side in future regional and international competitions.

So far, Qatar have suffered defeats to Bahrain (58-90), Kuwait (59-61), and hosts Egypt (58-79), showing flashes of improvement, particularly in the third quarter against Egypt (14-13). With four points from their campaign, the team will be aiming to sign off on a positive note against Tunisia.

The Qatari delegation is led by Abdullah Sultan Al-Jaber, board member of the Qatar Basketball Federation, with youth teams director Khalid Al-Maghni providing support.
