Team Qatar Triumph as 3x3 Basketball Champions in Sanya 2026

Sanya (China) – Qatar’s men’s 3x3 basketball team secured the gold medal at the Asian Beach Games – Sanya 2026 after a commanding 21–10 victory over Thailand in Wednesday’s final.

The title capped an intense day for the Qatari side, who played two decisive matches. They edged China 18–16 in a fast-paced semifinal before delivering a dominant performance in the final to seal gold.

Thailand had booked their place in the final with a narrow 20–18 win over the Philippines, while China claimed bronze after defeating the Philippines 21–13 in the third-place match.

Qatar showcased exceptional composure throughout the knockout stage, maintaining a high tempo and clinical efficiency despite the challenge of competing in multiple matches in a single day.

The team’s journey to gold followed a flawless group-stage campaign, topping Group C with three consecutive wins over Bahrain, Kazakhstan, and India, before overcoming Iran in the quarterfinals.

In the women’s competition, Qatar exited in the second round following a defeat to Singapore.

After the match, Mohammed Saad Al-Mughaisib, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, dedicated the victory to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, in recognition of their unwavering support for Qatari sport.

He emphasized that the team fully deserved the title, noting that this achievement marks Qatar’s third consecutive gold medal in 3x3 basketball at the Asian Beach Games, following triumphs in 2014 and 2016.
