Overview: The Sports Excellence Awards are an annual Qatar Olympic Committee event recognising athletes, teams, coaches, administrators, referees, sports organisations, partners and individuals whose work has contributed to Qatari sport and the Olympic Movement.

Purpose: The awards provide formal institutional recognition at the end of the sporting season. They celebrate competitive results, professional and administrative contribution, federation performance, support from public and private institutions and long-term service to sport in Qatar.

Continuity: QOC describes the event as an annual celebration of Team Qatar’s achievements. The awards were already established by 2017, when the ceremony at the Qatar National Convention Centre recognised athletes, organisations and individuals across a wide range of categories. The event has continued as a valued annual tradition.

Award categories: Categories have included Golden Federation, outstanding federation, men’s and women’s teams of the season, male and female athletes of the season, promising athletes, national and professional coaches, male and female administrators, referee of the season and para-athlete awards. The categories demonstrate that sporting success is treated as a collective system, not only as an athlete result.

Institutional recognition: The awards also recognise organisations that support the Olympic Movement, bodies that support community sports events, media partners, official Team Qatar supporters and personalities who have served sport in Qatar. Federation awards distinguish between team and individual sports.

2024 ceremony: The 2024 Sports Excellence Awards were held on 24 November at the Qatar National Convention Centre under the patronage of QOC President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. The ceremony brought together QOC leadership, federation presidents and leading figures from Qatar’s sports sector.

2024 sporting context: The ceremony reviewed a season that included Qatar’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mutaz Barshim’s high-jump bronze medal—his fourth Olympic medal in the event—and Qatar’s hosting of the World Aquatics Championships and the International Gymnastics Federation Congress.

Selected 2024 recognitions: Qatar Foundation received the Distinguished Organization in Supporting the Olympic Movement award; the Ministry of Education and Higher Education was recognised for supporting community sports events; and Alkass Sports Channels received the Media Partner award. The Qatar Handball Association won the Golden Federation Award for team sports, while the Qatar Athletics Federation received the corresponding award for individual sports. Team Qatar’s beach volleyball team was named Men’s Team of the Season.
