Doha: Denmark’s Mikkel Mathiesen won the Qatar Open Golf Championship with an impressive two-under 70 on the final day at the Doha Golf Club on Saturday.
The Dane, who had carded identical two-over 74 on the first two days, ended with a two-over 218, which was enough to comfortably clinch the title.
Although Saudi Arabia’s Faisal Salhab was close on the Dane’s heels on Friday, he fell behind on the final day, finishing with a one-over 73. Salhab finished three strokes behind Mathiesen with a five-over 221 for the tournament.
It was Mathiesen’s second Qatar Open win in three years, his previous victory coming in 2019.
Qatar’s Saleh Al Kaabi, who led the field at the end of the first day, came up with a strong final flourish to move from sixth on Friday to third. He carded a par-72 for the day to finish with a total of eight-over 224.
Had it not been for a poor display of 10-over 82 on Friday, Al Kaabi could very well have fancied a shot at the title.
Defending champion, Qatar’s Ali Al Shahrani, placed sixth after a three-over 75 on the final day. He had a card of 10-over 226 over three days.
