Team Qatar win 3x3 Basketball bronze medal at Asian Youth Games

Manama: Team Qatar’s 3x3 basketball team captured the bronze medal at the 3rd Asian Youth Games after defeating Mongolia 18–13 in the third-place playoff. The victory secured Qatar’s place on the podium alongside China (gold) and Bahrain (silver) following the conclusion of the basketball competition in Bahrain, which runs until October 31, featuring over 5,000 athletes from 45 Asian Olympic Committees.

The win added another medal to Team Qatar’s tally, bringing the country’s total to four medals — including Idris Abubakar’s gold in the men’s 110m hurdles, Dana Salem’s silver in the women’s 100m, and the equestrian team’s silver in the team show jumping event.

Team Qatar delivered an impressive performance against Mongolia, showing strong teamwork and offensive precision that earned them a deserved victory. The team’s consistency throughout the tournament saw them finish with seven wins and only one loss. They topped Group C in the preliminary round with a perfect record, defeating Cambodia (21–7), Thailand (22–17), Uzbekistan (21–20), the Maldives (21–8), and Palestine (21–7).

In the semifinals, Qatar fell to Bahrain 10–21, after previously advancing with a convincing 21–10 win over Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals.

The Qatari 3x3 basketball roster included Mohammed Saeed Badri, Bakaikani Mboji, Mohamedou Diop, and Azzam Mohammed Yeken.

In other competitions, Qatari swimmer Mohammed Ismail narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in the men’s 100m butterfly, just six hundredths of a second behind Hong Kong’s bronze medalist Kin Hei James. The gold went to Iran’s Mohammad Mehdi, while Philippines’ Jamesray Ajido claimed silver.

In cycling, Abdul Ali Hamza placed 21st in the individual time trial.

In badminton, Hamad Al Malki lost to Singapore’s Jay Rui Chiu 0–2 (9–21, 9–21) in the first round.

Qatar is represented at the Games by 67 male and female athletes competing in 16 sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball (3x3), equestrian (show jumping), golf, judo, jiu-jitsu, cycling, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, wrestling, volleyball, beach volleyball, and boxing.
