Al Tamimi wins silver at 23rd Asian Individual Squash Championships
Kuching: Qatar’s Abdulla al-Tamimi finished runner-up at the 23rd Asian Individual Squash Championship held in Kuching, Malaysia, reaffirming his place among Asia’s top players. Following an exceptional week that saw a dominant performance, al-Tamimi, ranked 23rd in the world, set up a final with Hong Kong’s Alex Lau losing 12-14, 11-13, 9-11 in the title clash.Al-Tamimi entered the tournament as the top seed and made a commanding start in the Round of 32 where he sealed a straight-game win over Kuwait’s Jassim Alghareeb (11-3, 11-0, 11-2). He then booked a last-eight berth with another dominant win, this time over South Korea’s Jooyoung Na (11-6, 11-10, 11-3).In the quarterfinals, al -Tamimi defeated Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran 11-7, 11-9, 11-3. He then carried that momentum into the semi-finals, where he met Hong Kong’s Henry Leung , ranked 49th in the world. Al-Tamimi was tested to his limits in the thrilling semi-final clash, but the Qatari star prevailed 11-7, 12-10, 11-4 to advance to book a title clash with Leung’s compatriot Lau, who had made it to the final with a 3-1 win over India’s Velanvan Senthilkumar (11-9, 13-11, 5-11, 11-6).
Team Qatar line up for FIBA Asia Cup
Doha: Qatar’s national basketball team has launched their overseas preparations for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup 2025 with a high-intensity training camp in Turkey, running from June 18 to July 3. Led by Turkish head coach Hakan Demir, the camp marks a crucial phase in the team’s build-up to the continental championship, set to take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5 to 17.Organized under the supervision of the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF), headed by Mohammed Saad Al-Meghaiseeb, the camp is part of a broader strategic program designed to fine-tune the team’s technical skills, physical conditioning, and tactical execution ahead of one of Asia’s most prestigious tournaments.The training schedule in Turkey includes intensive daily sessions focused on strengthening team chemistry and preparing for the high-stakes nature of international play. These preparations come at a critical time, with Qatar drawn into Group A, alongside basketball powerhouses Australia, Lebanon, and South Korea — widely regarded as one of the toughest groups in this edition of the tournament.According to the official schedule announced by FIBA Asia, Qatar will open their campaign against Lebanon on August 6, followed by a clash with South Korea on August 8, and will round off the group stage with a challenging encounter against Australia on August 10. Only the group winners will qualify directly for the quarterfinals, while second and third-place teams will face off in knockout matches for the remaining spots — making each game a critical step toward the title.Upon returning from Turkey, the team will regroup in Doha for a domestic training phase from July 8 to 14, before heading to South Korea for a second international camp from July 16 to 21, which includes a series of friendly matches from July 18 to 20, offering vital experience against high-level competition.To cap off their preparations, Qatar will take part in a friendly international tournament at Lusail Multipurpose Hall from July 25 to August 1, facing off against Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Japan. Qatar Reaches Semi-finals of 2025 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship
Manama - Qatar volleyball team qualified for the semi-finals of the 2025 Asian Men's Volleyball Championship after defeating Vietnam in the quarterfinals of the ongoing tournament in Bahrain, which runs until June 24, with 11 teams taking part.The Qatari team defeated Vietnam 3-2 in today's match at Isa bin Rashid Arena in Bahrain.The team lost the first set 29-31 but regained its strength in the second and third sets to win them 25-21 and 25-15. Vietnam won the fourth set 25-22, but Qatar managed to win the fifth deciding set 12-15.With this victory, Qatar will meet Pakistan, the runner-up of the last edition, in the semi-finals on Monday.
Samba finishes second in Paris Diamond League Meeting
Paris: Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba delivered a sensational performance at the Paris Diamond League on Friday, finishing second in the men’s 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 47.09 seconds— his fastest mark in seven years.Samba’s impressive run pushed American star Rai Benjamin all the way to the line, as the reigning Olympic champion held on for victory in 46.93 seconds, setting a new meet record. The Qatari hurdler’s time also surpassed the 2025 season-best of 47.28 seconds set by Olympic gold medallist Karsten Warholm, marking a strong return to form for Samba on the international stage.The USA’s Trevor Bassitt rounded out the podium with a time of 48.14 seconds.The result strengthens Benjamin’s dominance in the event this season, adding to his back-to-back Diamond League wins in under a week and confirming his status as a leading contender for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo.
Qatar spikers beat Australia in AVC Nations Cup
Doha: Defending champions Qatar warmed up with a 3-0 win over Australia in their ‘opening’ match of the AVC Men’s Volleyball Nations Cup in Manama, Bahrain, on Thursday.Qatar won the three sets against Australia 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22 to top Group B. Raimi (13) and Ibrahim (10) stood out for Team Qatar while Flowerday (10) and Pope (3) excelled for Australia.In the quarter-finals, to be played on June 21, Qatar will meet Vietnam while Australia will face South Korea.Standing at number 24 in the FIVB World Ranking, Qatar are also the highest ranked team among all AVC Nations Cup participants. The Aussies are ranked 33rd.Qatar’s scheduled opening match in the tournament was to be against Kazakhstan but it cancelled following the latter’s official withdrawal. Qatar decided to maintain the pre-set preparation schedule to avoid any disruption to the team’s rhythm or mental focus.Both Qatar and Australia had already advanced automatically to the quarter-finals due to Kazakhstan’s withdrawal, making the showdown between the two a decisive step toward the title.
Qatar’s Mahmoud qualifies for World Aquatics 2025
Montpellier: Qatar swimmer Mohamed Mahmoud booked his berth at the World Aquatics Championships 2025, to be held in Singapore from July 11 to August 3. Competing at the Elite French Championship in Montpellier, Mahmoud delivered a stellar performance in the 50m breaststroke, clocking an impressive 28.06 seconds to make the grade.By doing so, he has become the second Qatar swimmer to qualify for the global championships, following Ali Sayed, who surpassed the qualifying time in the 100m butterfly event during his participation at the Bell Canadian Swimming Trials, held in Canada last week.President of Qatar Swimming Federation Mubarak bin Ali Al Nuaimi congratulated the swimmers on their qualification.In a message on ‘X’ platform, he said, “Your dedication, hard work, and perseverance have paid off. We, at the Board of Directors of the Qatar Swimming Association, are extremely proud of you and your first-ever qualification in the history of Qatari swimming, and we are excited to see you shine in the upcoming championship. Keep challenging your limits and inspiring us all!’
