Qatar’s Al Athba competes in men’s skeet
Paris: Qatar’s shooter Rashid Al Athba finished 15th in the skeet qualifications on Saturday and missed out on qualifying for the final at the Paris Olympics Games.
At the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, the 36-year-old shot 118 out of 125 targets. Al Athba was placed 23rd after three series on first day, and he shot a 24 and 25 in the next two series on Saturday but that was not enough for him to enter the final.
Only top six shooters from the qualifications entered the final, where American Vincent Hancock won his fourth Olympic gold medal in the event.
QOC President visits “Olympism: More Than a Dream” Exhibition
Paris: His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and the QOC Secretary General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain visited “Olympism: More Than a Dream” Exhibition organized by the 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum and the Qatar Museums in Paris on the sidelines of the Olympics.
The exhibition brings together fascinating objects that document Olympic history and achievements from around the world.
Joaan bin Hamad chairs coordination meeting of Presidents of GCC National Olympic Committees
Paris: H.E. President of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani chaired a coordination meeting of Their Highnesses and Excellencies the Presidents of the National Olympic Committees of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
The meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the reception for Team Qatar in the French capital Paris, focused on enhancing the framework for joint sports cooperation within the GCC.
The meeting was attended by His Excellency Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain.
Younousse & Tijan go past Australia pair
Paris: Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan continue their quest for another medal at the Olympics after steamrolling Australia’s Mark Nicolaidis and Izac Carracher 21-14, 21-18 in Paris on Thursday.
The defending bronze medalists thus wrapped up their pool stage with a perfect record. It was straight business for the Qatari duo, who dominated the first set and held the Australians at bay.
The Australians attempted to mount a comeback in the second set, staying within two points for the majority, but ultimately had no answer for Qatar red-hot pair. The match was sealed in 40 minutes with a final attacking point by Younousse.
Tijan and Younousse converted 30 out of 42 attacks while registering nine digs compared to Australia’s two. In the round of 16, the Qatari pair will play one of the lucky losers in their next match scheduled for August 5.
Shahd looks to impress in women’s 100m
Paris: Team Qatar star Shahd Mohamed will begin Qatar’s athletics journey in Paris hoping to leave a mark on her Olympics debut as she will feature in the preliminary round of women’s 100m at Stade de France today.
Qatar has high hopes for track and field stars with eight athletes, spearheaded by reigning Olympic and World high jump champion Mutaz Barshim, taking part in the Games.
Abderrahman Samba, Bassem Hemeida and Ismail Doudai Abakar will represent Team Qatar in the men’s 400m hurdles. The trio has already made history by becoming the first Asian trio from a single nation to qualify for the event at Olympics.
The athletics team also features Abubakar Hayder in the 800 meters, Ammar Ismail in the 400 meters and Saif Mohammed in the pole vault.
Shahd registers personal best on her Olympic debut
Paris: In her first Olympic appearance at the Paris Games, Shahd Mohamed recorded a personal best to finish seventh in the third preliminary heats of women’s 100m at the Stade de France on Friday.
The 20-year-old clocked 12.53 seconds as she finished 25th out of 36 sprinters. First three in each heat and next 5 fastest qualifiers advance to the next round.
Shahd, who specialises in the 400m race, was pleased to gain valuable experience and achieve a good time. She said she plans to come back stronger in future competitions. Shahd had previously won a bronze medal in the West Asian Championship in Iraq and a silver in the mixed relay in the same event. She also had the honour of carrying the Qatari flag alongside Olympic high jump champion Mutaz Barshim during the opening ceremony last week.
