Team Qatar beat Japan in handball event to reach semi-finals
HANGZHOU - Qatar’s handball team stayed on course for another Asiad gold after they defeated Japan on Sunday to enter the semi-finals.
The defending champions claimed a 32-29 win in a pulsating match after securing a 16-15 lead in the first half.
They will meet Kuwait in the semi-final for a place in Thursday’s gold medal match.
Qatar Olympic Committee celebrates TAFISA World Walking Day
DOHA - The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has marked the TAFISA World Walking Day on Sunday at the Al-Gharafa Park, Doha. It’s an event that annually celebrated by the Association for International Sport for All (TAFISA).
Around 250 students (boys and girls ) from primary schools, enthusiasts of walking sport, directors of QOC departments, heads of sections and units , representatives from Ashghal Public Works Authority and Ministry of Municipality as well as the sport and community personalities were integral part of Sunday’s event. All participants walked a 1km distance around Al-Gharafa Park.
Event director, Mohammed Abdulsalam Abdulla said “ this event is celebrated worldwide by the lovers and amateurs from all age groups, as it is one of the QOC’s community programs that will keep sport for all concept active and will help individuals to build up better communities and improve the learning process for students”.
For her part, Event deputy director , Saeeda Mubarak Al-Abdulla said :” We are truly grateful to having primary school students and sport enthusiasts in this event, as one of the event’s key objectives is enhancing physical and mental activity, fight against modern disease and make sport for health concept applicable and real”.
The key objective of TAFISA World Walking Day is to promote sport for all culture , to encourage society doing all types of sports, namely the walking sport, because it is more safer and acceptable to all age groups.
Elseify wins hammer throw silver
Hangzhou: Ashraf Amgad Elseify secured a silver medal for Qatar at the Hangzhou Asian Games, hurling 72.42m in men’s hammer throw final Saturday.
There were more good performances from other team Qatar athletes with Mohamed al-Garni and Abdirahman Hassan entering the men’s 1500m final.
Elseify’s silver took’s Qatar tally to 5 medals including a gold, two silver and as many bronze medals. China’s Wang Qi took the gold in the event with a throw of 72.97 while Uzbekistan's Sukhrob Khodjaev claimed bronze after clearing 70.79.
Elseify, who won Asiad gold four years ago, was happy with his achievement. “I dedicate this medal to our wise leadership, Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, the Athletics Federation, and all the supporters who have played a major role in providing full support to me,” Elseify said Saturday.
"I am very happy to achieve a medal in this edition of the Asian Games, especially since it is the first continental championship in which I participated after my return from injury. Despite that, I succeeded, praise be to God, in achieving the silver medal, even though I was hoping for gold and I was close to that, but I was not lucky," he added.
Meanwhile, Al Garni and Hassan cruised into the final of 1500m after clocking 3:56.02 secs and 3:52.08 secs in their respective heats.
There was a disappointment for Al Annabi in men’s 100m as former Asian champion Femi Ogunode failed to reach final after clocking 10.40 secs, finishing fifth in the semi-finals.
At the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Park Main Stadium, Ismail Abakar (46.48 secs) also finished at dismal eighths in the men’s 400m with Saudi Arabia’s Yousef Masrahi winning the title with a time of 45.55 ses.
In men’s pole vault, Seifeldin Abdelsalam, 18, showed impressive performance finishing at creditable sixth position with a 5.45m clearance.
Team Qatar defeat Cambodia to reach quarterfinals
Hangzhou: Qatar’s 3x3 basketball team demonstrated their prowess with another commanding win to reach the quarter-finals of the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, yesterday.
The 3x3 basketball team defeated Cambodia with a convincing 21-5 win to advance, adding to their impressive track record - having previously triumphed over Kazakhstan (19-11), Thailand (16-12), and Kyrgyzstan (21-5) in Pool D.
Their stellar performance in the round-robin stage means they will face either Japan or Macau for a place in the semi-final, today at the Zhejiang Gongshang University Sports Centre
Qatar handball team defeat china
Hangzhou: Qatar’s handball team maintained their fine form the Hangzhou Asian Games as they defeated China 37-20 to top their group. The defending champions will meet Japan in their third and final main round match.
Meanwhile, the Qatari shooting team will participate in Archery competitions with the players Reem Al Nama and Hassan Ashkanani, along with Haya Al Hajri and Ahmed Al Abadi.
Kholoud Al Khalaf, Mohammed Al Rumaihi, Saeed Bouchareb and Rashid Hamad Al Athba will participate in the trap competitions.
The Qatari team participated on Saturday in the mixed 10-meter air pistol competition where Osama Al Shaiba achieved 271 points and Nasra Mahmoud scored 276 points. They ranked 18th in the competition with 547 points.
In squash, the Qatari team will begin the singles competitions at the Asian Games on Sunday, where Sayed Azlan will play a strong match against Mongolian champion in the round of 32 competitions. Abdullah Al Tamimi is preparing to play his match in the round of 16 on Monday, where he will face the winner of the match between the Pakistani and Thai teams which will be held on Sunday.
Qatar’s 3x3 team storm into semis
Hangzhou: Qatar’s 3x3 basketball team stormed into the semi-finals of the Hangzhou Asian Games after outclassing Japan 21-15 in the quarter-final. They will look for a place in the final as they meet Mongolia in the semi-final Sunday.
The other semi-final will be played between Chinese Taipei and South Korea with the final also slated to be held Sunday.
Also Saturday, Qatar basketball team defeated Indonesia 74-67 victory in their third and final Group D match Saturday. They will square off with Philippines in a qualifying match for the last-8 stage. The winner of the game will meet Iran in the quarter-final tomorrow.
