2023 World Judo Championships Organizing Committee Announces Tournament Details
DOHA - The Organizing Committee of the 2023 World Judo Championships announced Tuesday the details of the championships to be held at the Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena in Doha, Qatar, from 7 to 14 May 2023. The event will bring together top-ranking world champions from 99 countries.
This came in a press conference attended by President of the Qatar Taekwondo, Judo & Karate Federation (QTJKF), Vice President and Director General of the Organizing Committee, Khalid bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Secretary-General of the QTJKF and Chairman of the Sports Committee, Eid Ali Al Muraikhi, HE Chairman of the Media and Broadcasting Committee Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, Chairman of the Marketing and Communication Committee and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies Abdul Hadi Misfer Al Marri, and Vice Chairman of the Marketing and Communication Committee and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the tournament Abdullah Al Marri.
Al Attiyah explained that Qatar has always been a hub for major sporting events, starting from the 2006 Asian Games to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He added that the QTJKF has spared no effort in promoting judo in Qatar. Qatar welcomes, in cooperation with the International Judo Federation (IJF), 679 male and female players among the best athletes in this game globally, representing 99 countries, to display their skills and compete for titles, Al Attiyah added.
He extended his sincere thanks and appreciation to HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 2023 World Judo Championships, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani for backing the QTJKF and supervising the tournament in all its preparatory phases.
He added that the organizing committee will meet on Wednesday with the IJF president, who arrived yesterday in Doha, and the IJF Executive Committee. On Thursday, the IJF General Assembly will be held in the presence of all member states.
HE Chairman of the Media and Broadcasting Committee, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani said that more than 195 local and foreign journalists will be covering the tournament. It is a great challenge to provide all the satisfactory media services that are worthy of the reputation of Qatar, His Excellency said, highlighting the coordination with the IJF president more than a year ago to ensure the implementation of the best media plans, and to provide all means of comfort for media coverage.
Qatar Wins 20 Medals at 12th Arab Archery Championship
Tunis, May 3, 2023 - Qatari archers won 20 medals (5 gold, 15 bronze) to finish second in the overall ranking at the Arab archery championship organized at the Tunisian city of Djerba, with participation of 10 countries namely: Tunisia, Qatar, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Algeria, UAE, Sudan, Kuwait and Jordan.
The five gold medals for Qatar were won by Reem Al Saei, who got three gold medals, while the remaining two were won by the U-18 mixed teams, and the Qatari men's team in the compound bow competition.
During their participation in the international tournaments, The Qatari team's shooters seek to enhance their ranking points to win qualifying cards for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Stage set for Doha Diamond League 2023
DOHA – The high organising committee of Doha Diamond League 2023 chaired by Mr. Mohammed Issa Al Fadala, President of Qatar Athletics Federation , has announced on Sunday that all managerial and technical preparations are completed to host the first round of the event at Qatar Sports Club stadium in Doha on Friday.
Nearly 150 athletes, including world and Olympic champions from across the world will fight for top honors in the one day’s event in Doha.
Reigning Olympic and world high jump champion Mutaz Barshim and former world 400m hurdles bronze medallist Abderrahman Samba - two of Qatar’s star athletes - will get their Doha Diamond League campaigns underway at the Doha Meeting on May 5 on Friday.
The 2023 Wanda Diamond League comprises 14 meetings in total*, starting with Doha at the Qatar Sports Club on 5 May and concluding with a single final across two days in Eugene (16-17 September). Each of the 13 series meetings will be broadcast globally in a live two-hour programme.
Team Qatar win title of West Asia Athletics Championships
Doha- Qatar clinched three more gold medals on the final day to wrap up the West Asia Athletics Championship on top of the medal table at Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium yesterday.
Femi Ogunode, who won the 100m gold on opening day, secured his second gold clocking 20.70 secs in the men’s 200m race. Saudi Arabia’s Abdulaziz (20.98) and Lebanon’s Nooruddin Hadeed (21.18) completed the podium.
Abdurrahman Saeed handed Qatar victory in men’s 1,500m completing the race in 3:42.79 secs with his teammate Musab Adam (3:43.65) earning a silver medal, followed by Saudi Arabia’s Faez al-Sabiyi (3:44.63). Ahmad Amjad al-Saifi claimed second gold of the day for Al Annabi clearing a distance of 67.87m in men’s hammer throw. Khaleel Badwi secured bronze for the hosts in the event with a throw of 62.28m with Kuwait’s Ali Zankwi (66.61) taking silver medal. Also, Yasser Salem (14:16.47) won silver medal in men’s 5,000m race while Samar Raza won bronze medal for Qatar in women’s heptathlon.
The Qatari team raised its medal tally to 28 colored medals: 13 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and 7 bronze medals, securing first place in overall standings.
The former Qatari runner and Assistant Secretary-General of the Qatar Athletics Federation Talal Mansour said in an exclusive statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the impressive performance in the West Asian Athletics Champions calls for optimism for the future of Asian athletics which will give the world some fine talents, noting that the numerous talents in the region will find their way to the international stage and compete globally.
Mansour stressed the importance of benefiting technically from West Asia's rich record in athletics towards a future full of achievements, noting that training and camps benefit athletes, yet participation in tournaments strengthens their capabilities and raises their performance.
Ibrahim, Hamida and Dawood win gold
Doha- Qatar’s Moaz Ibrahim yesterday took the host country’s medal tally to nine by throwing the discus to a distance of 61.30 metres on day three of the West Asia Athletics Championships at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium.
Qatar have won 19 medals in the event, with nine gold, five silver and four bronze.

Ibrahim’s gold was the third of the day for Qatar, following exceptional performances by pole vaulter Saif Hamida who cleared the bar at 5.20 metres to emerge on top of a strong field in the final before one-lap hurdler Ismail Dawood won his final ahead of compatriot Bassem al-Hamidah who came second.
Earlier, Qatar’s Sajja Issa Sadoun won her second medal in the home event when she secured the silver medal in the in the women’s 400m hurdles.
Sadoun, who on Thursday won the gold in the women’s 400 metres, yesterday stopped the clock at 1:07.09 behind Iraq’s Kurdistan Be Mo Jamal who won the gold medal in 1:04.87. UAE’s Mahrah Taqliya won the bronze with a time of 1:07.51.
Qatar Wins the Honour of Hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027
The State of Qatar has been awarded the honour of hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. This was announced by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) at its Central Board meeting held today in the Philippines capital, Manila.
The Central Board’s unanimous decision in favour of Qatar was announced after a thorough evaluation of Qatar’s Candidature File and Final Presentation. The Qatar 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Bid Committee (Qatar 2027) presented a compelling vision, concept, and narrative for the event, which will be held in the Middle East and North Africa region for the very first time.
FIBA highlighted several reasons which prompted the Central Board Members to vote in favour of the Qatari File. This includes, but is not limited to, the readiness of world-class competition venues, its commitment to sport as a platform for realizing national development goals and its enthusiasm to continue the development of basketball at all levels locally. Furthermore, Qatar’s celebrated portfolio of mega-sport event hosting gave FIBA the confidence to confirm the decision without hesitation.
Qatar 2027’s commitment to long-term legacy planning and its focus on sustainability was further testament to the event’s value and impact potential on growing the sport of basketball in the region and around the world. Qatar’s File outlined how it will set new benchmarks in both areas to build on the country’s past achievements whilst investing in the continued development of local capacity for exceptional delivery of sporting events.
