Al Shaqab to host LGCT and GCL 2022 season opener
DOHA - Al Shaqab, a member of Qatar Foundation, will once again host the opening competition of the 2022 Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) and Global Champions League (GCL) team series.
The latest edition of the world’s premier five-star showjumping competition will bring together the best riders and horses in their quest for individual and team glory from March 3-6, 2022, under the stunning and iconic architecture of the Longines Arena at Al Shaqab, setting the scene for an electrifying weekend of equestrian sport.
There will be 19 events worldwide on the LGCT and GCL calendar 2022, starting with the championship season opener in Doha, and finishing before the ultimate showdown at the Global Champions Prague Playoffs in November.
Qatar’s Younousse and Tijan lead FIVB ranking
Doha - Qatar’s beach volleyball stars Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan retained their World No. 1 spot in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) ranking.
The new list released on Monday placed Younousse and Tijan who claimed the bronze medal of Tokyo 2020 Olympics right at the top with 5040 points ahead of Anders Berntsen Mol and Christian Sandlie Sørum of Norway in the second place with 4000 points while Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland claimed the third place with 3960 points.
Early this month, the Qatari duo claimed the title of King of court Series held at Aspire Zone with participation of 20 men's teams and 15 women's teams.
Team Qatar Handballers defeat Uzbekistan in Asian Men’s Championship
DAMMAM , KSA - Qatari handball team achieved on Monday a broad victory over its Uzbek counterpart, 46-15, in the second match of the main round of the 2022 Asian Men's Handball Championship, currently held in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and continues until January 31 and qualifies for the 2023 IHF World Men's Handball Championship in Poland and Sweden.
Qatar raised its tally to four points from two victories. Qatar has defeated Saudi Arabia 34-19 on Saturday.
Qatar will secure a World Championship qualification if the Saudi team lost to South Korea. However, if Saudi Arabia won its match against South Korea, the qualification spot will be determined on Wednesday when Qatar takes on South Korea.
South Korea is the title record-holders of the Asian Men's Handball Championship with eight trophies, followed by Qatar and Kuwait with each having four titles, and Japan in third place with two gold medals.
Qatar to take on Uzbekistan in Asian Men's Handball Championship
DAMMAM – Defending champions , Qatar’s handball team will lock horns against Uzbekistan in their second match of the main round of the 2022 Asian Men's Handball Championship in Dammam, Saudi Arabia on Monday.
Team Qatar members are looking for a second victory in the event, following their opening game victory 34-19 over hosts Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
The Valero Rivera-coached side has been placed in Group 1 in main group alongside nine-time winners South Korea, hosts Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan while Group 2 includes Kuwait, Iran, Iraq and Bahrain.
Top two teams from each group will book berths in the semi-finals of the event, which will be played on January 29. The final will be played on January 31.
The top five teams from the Championship will directly qualify for the 2023 World Men's Handball Championship, to be held jointly by Poland and Sweden.
Stage set for WTT Youth Star Contender Doha 2022
Doha: The World Table Tennis (WTT) has announced that Qatar will host the WTT Youth Star Contender Doha 2022 from March 7-11 at the Lusail Multipurpose Sports Hall.
The participating players will compete in boys and girls' events under 15 and 19 years.
The WTT Youth Star Contenders act as the next step on the international ladder with the best youth players being determined to compete in these competitions.
On the other hand, the Qatari Men's Table Tennis league for the new season will begin on Monday at Ras Abu Aboud Training Center.
Mikkel Mathiesen wins Qatar Open Golf Championship
Doha: Denmark’s Mikkel Mathiesen won the Qatar Open Golf Championship with an impressive two-under 70 on the final day at the Doha Golf Club on Saturday.
The Dane, who had carded identical two-over 74 on the first two days, ended with a two-over 218, which was enough to comfortably clinch the title.
Although Saudi Arabia’s Faisal Salhab was close on the Dane’s heels on Friday, he fell behind on the final day, finishing with a one-over 73. Salhab finished three strokes behind Mathiesen with a five-over 221 for the tournament.
It was Mathiesen’s second Qatar Open win in three years, his previous victory coming in 2019.
Qatar’s Saleh Al Kaabi, who led the field at the end of the first day, came up with a strong final flourish to move from sixth on Friday to third. He carded a par-72 for the day to finish with a total of eight-over 224.
Had it not been for a poor display of 10-over 82 on Friday, Al Kaabi could very well have fancied a shot at the title.
Defending champion, Qatar’s Ali Al Shahrani, placed sixth after a three-over 75 on the final day. He had a card of 10-over 226 over three days.
