Abdulwahab Brothers Advance to Second Round at Asian Games

Aichi-Nagoya, Japan-Team Qatar’s Mohammed Abdulwahab and Abdulla Abdulwahab advanced to the second round of the men’s singles table tennis competition at the 20th Asian Games – Aichi-Nagoya 2026 after securing convincing victories in their opening-round matches.

Mohammed Abdulwahab recorded a comprehensive 4–0 victory over Indonesia’s Junendra Mohammed, winning 11–2, 11–7, 11–6 and 11–9. He will face Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto in the second round today.

Abdulla Abdulwahab also produced a strong performance, defeating Laos’ Phongsa Anani 4–1. He won the first three games 11–2, 11–6 and 11–8 before dropping the fourth 10–12, then sealed the match with an 11–5 victory in the fifth game. He will meet Singapore’s Quek Yong in the second round today.

The swimming competition at the 20th Asian Games – Aichi-Nagoya 2026 concludes today, with Team Qatar swimmers set to compete in the 50m breaststroke, 200m backstroke, 400m freestyle and 200m butterfly.

The Qatari swimmers will look to conclude their campaign with strong performances after a determined showing throughout the competition. On the previous day, Saad Eddin Saad Eddin qualified for the men’s 800m freestyle final, where he finished 10th in a time of 8:01.43.

Qatar’s Abdulla Al Tamimi withdrew from his Round of 16 match against Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue due to injury, bringing his campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games to an early end.

Al Tamimi had been aiming to build on his bronze-medal performance at the previous edition of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and challenge for another podium finish. The Qatari player explained that he had been managing a hamstring injury and a minor tear before the tournament, but the injury worsened during the Round of 16 match, preventing him from continuing.

“I was trying to manage the injury and continue competing, but the tear became worse and I could not carry on playing. I wanted to continue and fight until the end, particularly as my ambition was to go as far as possible and compete for a medal,” Al Tamimi said.

He added that once he realised the injury had worsened and that he could no longer move or play normally, withdrawing was the appropriate decision. Al Tamimi expressed hope of making a quick return to competition following his recovery and continuing his pursuit of further achievements for Team Qatar.

Team Qatar riders Jassim Mohammed Al Jaham Al Kuwari and Saud Ahmed Al Buenain will compete today in the men’s individual dressage competition, seeking strong performances and a place among the leading riders.

The individual dressage competition will be held over two days, with the final scheduled for Sunday at the equestrian park in Nagoya.
