Paris hosted the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad from 26 July to 11 August 2024, becoming the first city to stage the Summer Olympics three times after 1900 and 1924. Organisers broke with tradition by holding the opening ceremony along the River Seine rather than inside a stadium, parading athletes by boat through the heart of the city. Around 10,700 athletes from 206 delegations competed across 32 sports and 329 events, and Paris 2024 became the first Olympics to reach full gender parity, with equal quota places for women and men.

Breaking made its Olympic debut, while surfing, sport climbing and skateboarding returned from Tokyo. The United States topped the medal table with 40 golds, level with China on golds but ahead on total medals. For Qatar, the Games marked an eleventh consecutive Summer appearance, with a delegation of 14 athletes competing in athletics, shooting, weightlifting, swimming and beach volleyball.

High jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, at his fourth Olympics, carried the flag alongside sprinter Shahd Mohamed at the opening ceremony and won bronze in the high jump, extending his streak of medals across four straight Games. It remained Qatar's only podium of the edition, though several athletes reached finals and repechage rounds in track events.
