Overview

Aquatics is one of the oldest and most varied groups on the Olympic programme. Five disciplines fall under World Aquatics — formerly FINA: swimming, diving, artistic swimming, water polo, and marathon swimming. Swimming itself has been part of the Games since Athens 1896, when races were held at sea before later moving to standardised pools.

Swimming forms the backbone of the programme, with 35 events across four strokes — freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly — plus individual medley and relay races for both sexes over distances ranging from 50m to 1500m. Diving, on the 10m platform and 3m springboard in both individual and synchronised formats, joined the Games at St. Louis 1904. Artistic swimming, contested in duet and team events, made its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 1984. Water polo is among the oldest Olympic team sports — men's competition since Paris 1900, women's since Sydney 2000. The 10km marathon swim, introduced at Beijing 2008 for both men and women, completes the programme.

With more than 40 medal events combined across its five disciplines, aquatics produces a steady stream of Olympic records and headline moments at every Games. World Aquatics has revised its competition formats repeatedly to keep pace with audiences, particularly in artistic swimming and water polo, where the rhythm of play and judging systems have been modernised in recent cycles.
