Overview

Basketball was invented by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith in December 1891 at the YMCA International Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, originally as an indoor winter activity using peach baskets and a football. The game spread rapidly through YMCA networks worldwide and joined the Olympic Games at Berlin 1936 for men, and at Montreal 1976 for women.

Olympic basketball is played under FIBA rules in the full five-on-five format, on a court measuring 28×15 metres divided by the three-point line. Matches consist of four quarters of ten minutes each, with field goals worth two or three points depending on distance, plus one-point free throws. Two teams of twelve players compete, with five on the court at any time.

3×3 basketball was added to the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020 as a fully separate discipline. It is played on a half-court between two teams of three, with games ending either after ten minutes or when one team reaches 21 points. The format was added in response to its widespread popularity in urban settings, bringing a youthful energy and rapid pace to the Olympic programme. It has become one of the most-watched team events of recent Games.
