Team Qatar athletes shine at GCC Games

Kuwait- Yousef Hassan Abouelela was the golden boy for Qatar in the pool at the third GCC Games in Kuwait on Friday, powering to victory in the men’s 200M backstroke with a superb show.

Abouelela touched down in 2:09.62, finishing well ahead of Saudi Arabia’s Ali Alessa (2:11.82) and fellow Qatari Abdalla Elghamry (2:12.02).

The Qatari champion started slowly but he wrested the lead after the first 50 metres and then maintained it all the way to emerge a comfortable winner.

It was his third medal of the competition, after silver in the 4x100 medley relay and bronze in the 100 backstroke.

Qatar won a silver and two more bronze medals in other swimming events. Abdulaziz Al Obaidly, Qatar’s star in the pool, finished second in the 200M breaststroke, timing 2:19.23 while his compatriot Omer Hassan Abouelela (2:26.66) was way back in third position. Kuwait’s Rashed Tarmoom (2:19.20) claimed the gold.

Qatar’s other bronze came in the 100M freestyle through Mohamed Mohamed, who timed 52.88 to finish behind Kuwait’s Waleed Abdulrazzaq (50.96) and UAE’s Yousuf Almatrooshi (51.12).

Qatar also won a silver and a bronze in shooting. The Qatari skeet team, featuring Hamad Al Menkhis, Abdul Aziz Al Attiaya and Mohamed Al Kuwari, claimed silver while the 25M Rapid Fire Pistol team, comprising Hamad Abu Tuaimeh, Abdulla Al Shahwani and Mohammed Al Tamimi, won bronze.

In basketball, Qatar suffered a 44-53 defeat against Saudi Arabia while their volleyball team defeated Oman 25-14, 25-21, 25-21.

With 12 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze medals, Qatar are in third place on the medals table, behind Kuwait (21-17-18) and Bahrain (17-16-10).
