Abubaker Abdulla to participate in 800m heats
Paris: Qatar’s Abubaker Abdulla will participate in the first round of men’s 800m event at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Wednesday.
Abdullah, who has a personal best of 1:44.33 seconds needs to finish in top 3 to advance to the semis, or he will have to go into repechage.
Qatar's Fares gears up for 102kg weightlifting challenge at Paris Olympics
Paris: Qatar’s first-ever Olympic gold medalist Fares Ibrahim continues his preparation for the Paris Games, hoping to bag second consecutive title after his triumph in Tokyo.
The weightlifter shattered two Games records, setting new marks for the clean and jerk (225kg) and total lift (402kg) to win in the 96kg category in the Tokyo Games.
The 26-year-old will now compete in 102kg starting on Saturday as the 96kg category has been eliminated.
Fares moved his training camp to Paris from Italy where he was training along with the Italian weightlifters.
Fares’ father Ibrahim Hassouna, who is also his coach, said that the Italian camp was successful by all standards and that Fares benefited greatly from the coaches.
Ammar Ismail finishes fifth
Paris: Qatar’s Ammar Ismail set a season and personal best timing respectively before bowing out of the Paris Olympics. Ismail improved his personal best for the second time this week as he finished fifth in the 400m semi-final.Ismail – who had won his repechage round on Monday – set a time of 44.64 seconds.
Barshim advances to High Jump final
Paris: Olympic champion Mutaz Barshim advanced to the final round of the high jump competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Wednesday, finishing third in the preliminary round overall.
Barshim successfully cleared three heights: 2.15 meters, 2.20 meters, and 2.27 meters.
The Qatari athlete will compete in the final on Saturday, where he aims to defend his gold medal from the Tokyo Olympics. Barshim previously won a silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics and a bronze at Rio de Janeiro 2014.
Holding the second-highest jump in the sport's history at 2.43 meters, achieved in Brussels in 2014, Barshim trails only the record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in 1993.
QOC President Meets President of French Olympic Committee
Paris: H.E. President of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani met Tuesday with HE President of the French Olympic Committee and President of the International Cycling Union David Lappartient.
During the meeting, they discussed means to enhance cooperation in light of the long-term partnership between the two sides, with the aim of developing the sports movement in the two countries.
H.E. the President of Qatar Olympic Committee also met with the Refugee Olympic Team on the sidelines of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Abubaker Abdalla to participate in 800m repechage
Paris: Qatar’s middle-distance runner Abubaker Haydar Abdalla will take part in repechage round today, hoping to qualify for the men’s 800m semi-final.
During the heats on Wednesday, the two-time Asian champion failed to advance as he clocked 1:48.42 secs to finish seventh in his heat.
