Samba aims high in 400mh semis
Paris: Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba will be in action on Wednesday at 8:35pm in semi-final 2 of Men’s 400m hurdles and will be hoping to finish in top two to reach the final.
Samba finished fifth in Tokyo three years ago but has struggled with injuries since then.
Samba qualified for the semis after finishing third in his heat in a time of 48.35 seconds, behind Norwegian Karsten Warholm, the defending champion, and Frenchman Clement Ducos.
Younousse, Tijan eye place in semis; Samba aims final spot
Paris: Qatar beach volleyball pair Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan will be aiming to qualify for the semi-finals on Wednesday, while 400m hurdler Abderrahman Samba will be gunning for a slot in the final at the Paris Olympics.
Younousse and Tijan – the Tokyo Games bronze medallists – will take on USA’s Miles Partain and Andrew Benesh in the quarter-finals at 11pm Qatar time. The duo have been in prime form in Paris, having won all four of the matches so far. If they get past Partain and Benesh on Wednesday they are scheduled to face Sweden’s David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig in the semis. Younousse and Tijan had beaten the World No 1 pair in the group stages and look determined to win a second successive Olympic medal.
Sheikh Joaan attends athletics competitions
Paris: The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani attended the athletics competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Monday where Qatar’s Abderrahman Samba qualified to 400mh semifinals and Ammar Ismail secured his spot in 400m semifinals.
Sheikh Joaan met also with Lord Sebastian Coe, President of the World Athletics and reviewed aspects of sports cooperation.
Sheikh Joaan meets ITU President
Paris: The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani met yesterday with the International Triathlon Union (ITU) President Marisol Casado at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The meeting was also attended by the QOC Secretary-General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain and ITU Secretary-General Antonio Arimany.
The meeting discussed areas of development and mutual cooperation between the QOC and the ITU.
Younousse and Tijan sail into quarters
Paris: Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan booked their place in the quarter-finals of the beach volleyball event of the Paris Olympic Games on Monday.
At the Eiffel Tower Stadium, 13th-seeded pair and 2020 Tokyo Games bronze medallists breezed past 23rd-seeded Marco Grimalt and Esteban Grimalt of Chile 2-0 (21-14, 21-13) to register their fourth consecutive win in Paris. Younousse and Tijan stayed well in control throughout the match and prevailed in all elements of the game. Younousse starred on the block and raised as many as seven stuffs, including the one that brought in the match winner, and finished with a 15-point match high. Tijan led the Qatari attack and fired one ace to tally a total of 14 points. Tomorrow, Younousse and Tijan will take on Miles Partain and Andrew Benesh of the United States in a quarter-final battle for passage to the last four.
Partain and Benesh beat Italy’s Samuele Cottafava and Paolo Nicolai in straight sets, 21-17, 21-18. The US pair found success with the jump set technique, reading the Italian defence to perfection and converting for easy scores. Benesh was a force at the net, winning multiple meetings in the air with Tokyo silver medallist Nicolai. A 3-0 run gave the Americans a 12-7 lead in the first and they went on to take the set by a comfortable margin.
Bassem Hemeida bows out
Paris - Team Qatar's Bassem Hemeida concluded his participation in the 400 meter hurdles race at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Tuesday.
Yesterday, Hemeida competed in the second round of the 400 meters hurdles, recording a time of 49.64 seconds. However, he did not qualify for the final, marking the end of his participation in the ongoing Summer Olympics in France.
Despite being eliminated from the tournament, Hemeida achieved his personal best record during this season.
Hemeida expressed his optimism for the future, noting that he faced significant challenges with injuries this season, which impacted his preparation.
