Sheikh Joaan attends 110th Anniversary of Asian Games in Hangzhou
Hangzhou – The Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani attended the 110th anniversary celebration of the Asian Games organized by the Olympic Council of Asia in Chinese city of Hangzhou on Sunday on the sidelines of 19th Asian Games-Hangzhou 2022.
The ceremony was also attended by the Acting President of the Olympic Council of Asia, H.E Raja Randhir Singh, H.E Second Vice- President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Vice-President of OCA for West Asia, Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari and the Qatar Olympic Committee Secretary General and the OCA Vice-President for the 2030 Asian Games, H.E Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain.
Qatar Volleyball Team Qualify for Semi-finals
Hangzhou, September 24 (QNA) - The Qatari volleyball team qualified for the semi-finals of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou after defeating Pakistan 3-0 (26 - 24, 25 - 19, 23 - 25, 25 - 18).
In a high-level match, the Qatari team succeeded in winning the first and second halves but lost the third half by two points. The match went to a fourth half in which the team players were able to win it with a difference of seven points.
The Qatari team will face Iran on Monday in the semi-finals.
On the other hand, The Qatari beach volleyball team (1) qualified for the quarterfinals of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou after defeating their Omani counterpart 2-0.
The duo Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse defeated the Omani team Al Shereiqi and Al Hassani 2-0 with a score of 21-13 and 21-11 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, the Qatari beach volleyball team (2) consisting of Mahmoud Essam and Abdullah Naseem exited the competitions after losing to Chinese team in the round of 16 of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou.
Spectacular show marks Hangzhou Asian Games opening
HANGZHOU: The 19th Asian Games opened to a colourful start in Hangzhou on Saturday. With a theme based on water and tide, which are integral parts of city life and promoting principles of simplicity, sustainability and cost-effectiveness, Hangzhou put together a spectacular opening ceremony.
Chinese President Xi Jinping declared the Asian Games open at the ceremony that lasted over 90 minutes, launching a two-week sporting extravaganza that boasts more athletes than the Olympics.
The Qatar contingent was led by flag-bearers in triathlete Tamim Jamal Al Kuwari and dressage rider Maryam Al Buainain as they walked out into the 80,000-capacity Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.
After being delayed by a year because of China’s now-abandoned zero-Covid policy, more than 12,000 competitors from 45 nations and territories will battle it out in 40 disciplines.
Blending the realms of artificial intelligence and eco-friendly technology it was a truly unique opening featuring a breathtaking futuristic light show as its centerpiece.
After the traditional dance forms, China also showcased its advancement in technology, creating images of different sporting arenas which left the audience amazed.
Qin Haiyang and Yang Liwei were China’s flag-bearers. They have fielded a 887-member contingent for the continental showdown.
Qatar has sent a strong 185-athlete contingent, who will compete in 27 events: archery, athletics, basketball, boxing, chess, cycling, electronic sports, equestrian, football, fencing, gymnastics, golf, handball, jiu-jitsu, karate, windsurfing, squash, swimming, tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, table tennis, volleyball, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball and weightlifting.
Qatar – which won 13 medals, including 6 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze at 2018 Asiad in Jakarta and Palembang – is hoping for its best medal haul ever. The nation’s strongest gold medal hope is from Olympic champions – Mutaz Barshim in high jump and Fares Ibrahim in weightlifting.
The handball and volleyball team and beach volleyball pair Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan are also strong contenders for gold.
On Sunday, Qatar’s spikers face Pakistan in the quarter-finals, while the 2018 gold medallists Younousse and Tijan take on Oman’s Haitham Al Shereiqi and Ahmed Al Hosni in the round of 16 at the Ningbo Banbianshan Court. Qatar’s second beach volleyball duo Mahmoud Essam and Abdullah Naseem are also up against a Chinese pair in the last 16.
The handball team will play their first Group B match against Hong Long at the Zhejiang Gongshang University Sports Centre, as they gear up to defend the gold they have won in the last two editions. Qatar athletes will also be in action on Sunday in swimming, tennis, fencing, esports and taekwondo.
Although the Games officially opened on Saturday, sports such as football, cricket, volleyball and table tennis had already begun.
The Games will be staged at 54 venues – 14 newly constructed – mostly in Hangzhou but also extending to cities as far afield as Wenzhou, 300 kilometres (180 miles) south.
Sheikh Joaan meets Kuwait Olympic Committee President
HANGZHOU – (China)- The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani met today in Hangzhou, China with H.E. President of the Kuwait Olympic Committee Sheikh Fahad Nasser Al Sabah on the sidelines of Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
The meeting reviewed aspects of sports cooperation and ways to support and develop them.
Sheikh Joaan attends Qatar Olympic Football team match against Palestine
The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani attended Qatar Olympic Football team match against Palestine held on Friday at Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
The match was also attended by Qatar’s Ambassador to China H.E. Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Dehaimi, the QOC Secretary General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain and Members of Qatar delegation at Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games.
Team Qatar spikers reach quarterfinals
Hangzhou: Qatar’s volleyball team entered the quarterfinals at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games in China yesterday.
Qatar’s volleyball team secured a convincing 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-17) win over Bahrain in the pre-quarters at the China Textile City Sports Centre Gymnasium.
Team Qatar, who had earlier defeated Thailand and Hong Kong, will face Pakistan in the quarter-finals tomorrow. Pakistan beat fancied South Korea in the pre-quarters earlier yesterday
