Barshim seals spot in DL Finals
DOHA - Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim finished runner-up at the Lausanne Diamond League (DL) yesterday.
The Olympic champion also sealed his spot for the Diamond League Finals, which will be held in Zurich on September 7.
At the Stade de la Pontaise yesterday, Barshim was tied with Andriy Protsenko on 2.24 meters, but the Ukrainian walked away with gold on a countback. USA’s JuVaughn Harrison, who also cleared 2.24m, took bronze. Protsenko had first time clearances at 2.15, 2.20 and 2.24 ahead of Barshim, who had a similar sheet barring second clearance at 2.20m.
"I am in a good shape and good mental space, there are a few important meets ahead," Barshim said yesterday.
"I will be defending my third consecutive DL title at the finals in Zurich, so there is a lot at stake for me. Of course I want to finish my season as good as I can," he added.
Qatar to take on Cuba in 2022 FIVB Men's World Championship
Ljubljana, Slovenia – Qatar national men's volleyball team will take on Cuba in their second match at the 2022 FIVBA World Championships on Sunday.
The tournament being staged in Poland and Slovenia will conclude on September 11
Team Qatar began their campaign in the event with a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Japan on Friday.
Qatar are in Pool B, which also includes World No 1 Brazil, Japan and two-time runners-up Cuba.

Japan beat Qatar in opener of the 2022 FIVB Men's World Championship
Ljubljana , Slovenia - Qatar lost to Japan on the opening day of the 2022 FIVB Men's World Championship in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Friday. The tournament being staged in Poland and Slovenia will conclude on September 11.
On Friday, Japan were better as they prevailed over Al Annabi with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-15 scoreline. Qatar are in Pool B, which also includes World No 1 Brazil, Japan and two-time runners-up Cuba. The national team now faces Cuba on Sunday before their last group match against Brazil on August 30.
It is Qatar’s maiden appearance in the tournament, with President of Qatar Volleyball Association (QVA) and the West Asian Volleyball Federation Ali bin Ghanem al-Kuwari terming it an historic achievement. He hoped the team will do well on their debut in the World Championship, saying the federation left no stone unturned in team's preparation for the major competition.
Meanwhile, Qatar were beaten by Bangladesh 0-3 in the second round of of the 21st Asian Men’s U-20 Volleyball Championship in Manama, Bahrain on Friday.
Team Qatar line up for FIVB Men’s World Championship
Ljubljana -Qatar national volleyball team have completed their preparations for the 2022 FIVB Men's World Championship to be held in Poland and Slovenia from August 26 to September 11.
Team Qatar will take on Japan in the beginning of their campaign at the event on August 26.
Qatar were drawn in Pool B along with world no. 1 Brazil, Japan and two-time runners-up Cuba for this year’s FIVB Men’s World Championship.
Qatar then will face Cuba on August 28 before their last match in the first round against Brazil on August 30.
On the other hand, Qatar youth volleyball team will take on Bangladesh in the second round of the 21st Asian Men’s U20 Volleyball Championship on Friday.
Team Qatar qualified to the second round after beating Kuwait 3-2 on Wednesday.
The event features the participation of six arab nations including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq and hosts Bahrain.
Qatar edge Ghana 2-1 in Austria
VIENNA: Qatar on Tuesday defeated Ghana 2-1 at the Four-Nation friendly tournament at Wiener Neustadt Stadium in Austria.
Ahmed Alaaeldin gave Qatar an early lead with a strike in the second minute, with Musab Khader doubling the lead in the 26th minute. Afri Akwa pulled one back in the 68th minute for Ghana.
In other match yesterday, Morocco defeated Jamaica 3-0.
Qatar played out a 2-2 draw against Morocco in their opening match in Austria.
Al Annabi will now take on Jamaica on August 26 in their last match. The Felix Sanchez-coached side is taking part in the event as part of their FIFA World Cup preparations.
Qatar will play in Group A of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which includes Ecuador, Senegal and the Netherlands.
Japan defeat Qatar in Asian Men Youth Handball Championship
MANAMA - Qatar men's youth handball team suffered a 31-21 defeat on Wednesday at the hands of Japan in group B game of 2022 Asian Championship currently held in Bahrain and set to run through August 31.
Wednesday’s defeat has stopped team Qatar winning run, with just four points in their tally and will shake hands with Kuwait counterparts on Friday.
The top five teams from the event will directly qualify for the 2023 IHF Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship, which will be held in Croatia in 2023.
