Overview

Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in human history. Cave paintings depicting wrestling date back some 15,000 years, and organised contests were documented across the civilisations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and India. It was among the most prestigious events of the ancient Greek Olympics, and was included in the modern Games from their inaugural edition in Athens 1896.

Olympic wrestling is contested in three distinct styles. The first is freestyle, available to both men and women, which permits the use of the legs in attack and defence and allows holds anywhere on the body. The second is Greco-Roman, contested by men only, which prohibits all holds below the waist and the use of the legs, restricting techniques to the upper body. Women's freestyle was added to the programme at Athens 2004.

All bouts take place on a circular nine-metre mat. A wrestler can win in two ways: by pinning the opponent's shoulders to the mat — a fall — or by accumulating more technical points than the opponent. The Paris 2024 men's competition included six weight categories each in freestyle and Greco-Roman, while the women's competition featured six weight categories in freestyle. The sport is governed internationally by United World Wrestling (UWW), which has overhauled scoring systems and rules multiple times to enhance athlete safety and competitive fairness.
