Doha: The Qatar Weightlifting Federation honored team Qatar star Fares Ibrahim, who secured two silver medals at the World Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Mamana, Bahrain. The celebration took place during the reception of Fares Ibrahim and the national team delegation at Hamad International Airport last night, amidst a festive atmosphere, following his latest remarkable achievement in his distinguished sporting career.  Fares, who previously won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, clinched two silver medals in the 102kg category.  Khalid Abdullah Al-Hammadi, Board Member of the Qatar Weightlifting Federation, commended Fares Ibrahim's significant accomplishment, emphasizing that it reaffirms his status as one of Qatar's most prominent athletes in recent years, given his achievements at the Olympic, global, and Asian levels.  For his part, Fares Ibrahim expressed his happiness at winning two silver medals at the World Championships, dedicating the achievement to Qatar and to everyone who has supported him throughout his sporting journey, particularly the Qatar Weightlifting Federation.    

DOHA, December 23, 2019-Qatar's Fares Ibrahim Hassouna bagged two gold medals at the Qatar International Cup Weightlifting Championships on way to securing his spot at the Tokyo Olympics next year.Fares, who is a junior world champion and a world silver medallist at the senior level, won the 96kg class at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Doha yesterday much to the joy of Qatari fans at the venue.Fares beat Iranian competitors for his gold medals, lifting 228kg in the clean and jerk and 404kg in total.“I am very happy and with my effort today," said Fares, who finished seventh at the Rio Olympics as an 18-year-old.“I was very young when I took part in the first Olympics but now I am experienced and much more confident. Hopefully I can win a medal in Tokyo next year," added the 21-year-old. Iran's Kianoush Rostami finished second while his compatriot Ali Miri was third. Rostami won the snatch title with 178kg. Miri's best in the snatch was just 162kg.Fares beat Rostami in all the three attempts in the clean and jerk to ensure his first gold medal. While the Qatari recorded 213, 223 and 228kg, the Iranian hoisted 210, 220 and 225kg, which allowed Fares to win the second gold with a difference of just one kilo.Azerbaijan's Minkova Kastova Boyanka made a clean sweep of all the three gold medals in the women's 59kg class, Latvia's Rebeka Koha and Romania's Irina Lacramiora Lepsa was third.North Korean Choe Hyo Sim emerged the champion in the women's 64kg category, totaling 229kg, eight kilos more than second-placed Italian Giorgia Bordignon's attempt. The North Korean was second to Bordignon in the snatch but won the remaining two sections to stamp her class. The bronze medal went to Indian Rakhi Halder, who was fifth in the snatch but did well in the clean and jerk to finish second with 123kg, which helped her secure the third spot in the total.

Doha, December 22, 2018- Qatar's weightlifting star Fares Ibrahim Hassouna lifted a record total of 397kg to win gold during the 5th edition of Qatar International Cup 2018 in Doha yesterday.In the men's 96kg category (Group A), Fares lifted 172kg in the snatch, followed by a clean and jerk lift of 225kg to outsmart a field of 14 top class weightlifters.With yesterday's lift, Fares also renewed the junior records in both clean and jerk and combined weights.Chinese weightlifter Fuxuan Tian lifted 170 in snatch and 212kg in the clean and jerk round to win the silver medal with a total lift of 382kg.Belarusian athlete Yauheni Tsikhantsou, was placed third after being just one kilo short of the total weight lifted at the InterContinental Doha.In the women's 64kg class, China's Ting Huang established a new junior world record by lifting a total of 232kg. In the process, she bettered the previous records for snatch and jerk with new figures of 105kg and 127kg respectively.Taiwanese Kuo Hsing Chun also won yesterday, with a snatch lift of 103 kg, clean and jerk of 130 kg and a combined lift of 233 kg in the women's 59 kg division.As many as 130 athletes from 35 countries including 64 male contenders are taking part in the event, a qualifying competition for the 2020 Olympic Games, hosted by the Qatar Weightlifting Federation (QWF).
