Qatar Weightlifting Federation honors Fares Ibrahim for winning two silver medals at the world championships

Doha: The Qatar Weightlifting Federation honored team Qatar star Fares Ibrahim, who secured two silver medals at the World Weightlifting Championships 2024 in Mamana, Bahrain. 

The celebration took place during the reception of Fares Ibrahim and the national team delegation at Hamad International Airport last night, amidst a festive atmosphere, following his latest remarkable achievement in his distinguished sporting career.  

Fares, who previously won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, clinched two silver medals in the 102kg category.  

Khalid Abdullah Al-Hammadi, Board Member of the Qatar Weightlifting Federation, commended Fares Ibrahim's significant accomplishment, emphasizing that it reaffirms his status as one of Qatar's most prominent athletes in recent years, given his achievements at the Olympic, global, and Asian levels.  

For his part, Fares Ibrahim expressed his happiness at winning two silver medals at the World Championships, dedicating the achievement to Qatar and to everyone who has supported him throughout his sporting journey, particularly the Qatar Weightlifting Federation.

Qatar handball begin title defence with 40–17 victory over Hong Kong

Nagoya:  Qatar’s men’s handball team recorded a comfortable 40–17 victory over Hong Kong yesterday in their opening match at the 20th Asian Games Aichi–Nagoya 2026.The victory earned Qatar their first two points in Group A, which also includes Japan and China.Qatar imposed their style on the match despite making a below-par start to the first half. Some early haste and errors allowed Hong Kong to remain competitive and exchange goals with Qatar, with the score level at 3–3.As the match progressed, Qatar regained their composure, corrected their mistakes and gradually took control. An improved defensive performance and greater efficiency in attack helped them establish a 6–3 lead before they continued to dominate and ended the first half 19–8 ahead.  Arrow

Ali Tamer Reaches Asian Games 100m Freestyle Final with National Record

TOKYO – Qatari swimmer Ali Tamer booked his place in the men’s 100m freestyle final at the 20th Asian Games (Aichi-Nagoya 2026) on Sunday, setting a new national record in the process.Competing in the preliminary heats at the Aquatics Centre, Tamer finished second in his heat in 48.65 seconds to qualify for the final and lower his previous national record of 49.10 seconds.Tamer will look to build on his strong showing in the final as he seeks to deliver a notable performance for Qatari swimming.Qatar’s swimming team will return to action on Monday in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, aiming to produce another strong performance at the continental Games.Qatar’s swimming delegation comprises seven athletes: Mohamed Mahmoud, Ali Tamer, Saad Eddin Saad Eddin, Emil Mounir Fouzai, Abdullah Al Ghamri, Tamim Al Humaida and Mohamed Aziz Jilani.The swimming program at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 features 41 individual and relay events.The 20th Asian Games are being held in Japan from September 19 to October 4, 2026. Sheikha Hind Meets Qatari Female Athletes Competing at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games

Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Member of Board Of Directors of the Qatar Olympic Committee, today met with several of Team Qatar’s female athletes competing at the 20th Asian Games – Aichi-Nagoya 2026, during a visit to Bayt Qatar in Nagoya.The meeting brought together female athletes from Qatar’s volleyball, shooting, table tennis and 3x3 basketball teams, with H.E. Sheikha Hind taking the opportunity to speak with the athletes about their experiences in Japan, their preparations for the Games and their ambitions for the competitions ahead.H.E. Sheikha Hind praised the athletes for their dedication and commitment and encouraged them to remain focused throughout the competitions, giving their utmost as they represent Qatar on the continental stage. She also highlighted the continued development of women’s sport in Qatar and the important role of female athletes in inspiring future generations.The athletes expressed their appreciation for H.E. Abdulrahman Mostafa wins Qatar’s first silver medal at Aichi–Nagoya 2026

Nagoya: Team Qatar’s Abdulrahman Mostafa claimed Qatar’s first silver medal at the Aichi–Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan.Mostafa delivered an impressive performance to secure silver in the men’s under-60kg karate event and earn a place on the podium.The Team Qatar athlete reached the final after a series of impressive victories yesterday. He defeated Uzbekistan’s Mukhriddin Torakhonov 4–1 in the round of 16 before overcoming Vietnam’s Chu Van Duc 10–4 in the quarter-finals. He continued his fine form in the semi-finals, recording a commanding 7–1 victory over Malaysia’s Hari Sankar.In the final, experience played a decisive role as Kuwait’s Abdullah Shaaban claimed an 8–0 victory to win gold, while Mostafa took the silver medal.The silver represents a major achievement for the promising Qatari athlete, who demonstrated his considerable potential and delivered an impressive performance in his Asian Games debut.Mostafa is considered one of Qatar’s leading karate athletes, having previously won gold in the men’s under-60kg category at the 24th Asian Cadet, Junior and Under-21 Karate Championships.Karate competition will continue tomorrow, with Team Qatar’s athletes aiming to win more medals and raise the national flag high at the Aichi–Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.Qatar’s Yaman Ashraf will compete in the men’s under-67kg category, beginning his campaign against Bangladesh’s Islam Munirul in the round of 16.Ashraf will be hoping to secure victory in his opening bout and progress confidently towards medal contention.Qatar are represented in the karate competition by three athletes: Abdulrahman Mostafa in the men’s under-60kg category, Yaman Ashraf in the under-67kg category and Abdullah Rashad in the under-84kg category.  Arrow
