Overview

Weightlifting is one of the oldest sports in recorded history, and one of the founding disciplines of the modern Olympic Games at Athens 1896. Men's competition has featured in most editions since, while women's weightlifting was officially added at Sydney 2000.

Athletes compete in fixed weight categories using just two lifts: the snatch, in which the barbell is lifted from the floor to overhead in a single continuous motion; and the clean and jerk, where the lifter first brings the bar to shoulder height, then drives it overhead. The Paris 2024 categories included five for men (61kg, 73kg, 89kg, 102kg, +102kg) and five for women (49kg, 59kg, 71kg, 81kg, +81kg). Each athlete is given three attempts at each lift, and the winner is determined by the highest combined total of their best snatch and best clean and jerk; in case of a tie, the lighter athlete ranks higher.

Weightlifting tests five qualities at once: explosive power, technique, flexibility, balance, and mental composure under pressure. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) governs the sport and has overseen significant reforms in recent years to its weight category structure and anti-doping framework.
