Qatar to take on Bahrain in semis of Olympic qualifiers
Doha, October 24, 2019- Qatar will take on Bahrain in the semifinals of the Asian Men's Handball Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Thursday. Only the winners of the tournament, being held at Al Duhail Arena, is assured of a place in the Tokyo Games.Qatar finished their group engagements with six points, from three wins over Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and India, to finish on top of Group A, while Bahrain finished second in Group B.In the other semifinal, Group A runners up Saudi Arabia take on South Korea, who edged Bahrain to emerge as Group B winners.The participating teams were divided into two groups Team Qatar were drawn in Group A alongside Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and India while the second group includes Bahrain, South Korea, Iran, and Kuwait.While the champions will receive the ticket to the Tokyo Games, the runners up will have to compete in the playoffs next April.It is the second time in a row that Qatar is hosting the Asian Men's Handball Qualification Tournament for the Olympic Games.
Nasra Mohammed wins pistol gold in GCC Women's Games
Kuwait, October 24, 2019 – Qatar's Nasra Mohamed claimed the gold medal of 25m Pistol event at the sixth edition of GCC Women's Games 2019 in Kuwait.Aysha Al Beraiki of Bahrain took the silver medal while her compatriot Moza Ali finished third.Moreover, Qatar's skeet team including Amal Ahmed, Fatima Saeed and Aysha Ahmed clinched the bronze medal on Wednesday. Kuwait led the standings while Bahrain took the second place.On the other hand, Qatar fencing team grabbed the silver medal of Epee event and bronze medal of Sabre event.In basketball event, Qatar defeated Oman 61-23 while Qatar handball team eased past Oman 31-15.The sixth edition of Games is bringing together six GCC nations who are competing in 11 events.
QOA, Aljazeera Media Institute sign MoU
Doha, October 22, 2019-(QNA) - Aljazeera Media Institute and Qatar Olympic Academy (QOA) signed Monday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to achieve maximum benefit in the fields of media training and organize joint training programs between the two sides.Executive Director of QOA Saif Mohammed Al Nuaimi and Director of Aljazeera Media Institute Mounir Daymi signed the MoU.The MoU includes media and sports consultations, joint workshops, and seminars and conferences in sports media, as well as the exchange of equipment and technical expertise in the processing of media institutions.Executive Director of QOA Saif Mohammed Al Nuaimi said that QOA has offered many courses in the field of sports media in cooperation with the International Sports Press Association, which has been very popular over the past years, therefore, QOA decided to be more specialized in this area through this agreement with Aljazeera Media Institute.Al Nuaimi pointed out that through this cooperation, both institutions will work together to organize the most specialized courses in the field of sports media in partnership to develop the competencies of human cadres inside and outside the State of Qatar professionally and benefit from the expertise of Al Jazeera Media Network.Director of Aljazeera Media Institute Mounir Daymi expressed delight at signing the MoU with the QOA, which ranks among the 20 most active and influential Olympic academies around the world through its programs for the Qatari and neighboring communities.Daymi added that the MoU seeks to keep pace with the sports scene and the state of Qatar, especially with the organizing of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and the State of Qatar's hosting of many international sporting events recently, most recently the 2019 Doha World Athletics Championships and the ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019. He looked forward to a more fruitful cooperation with the Academy shortly through the establishment of courses in the field of sports media. (QNA)
Wadha Al Abdullah claims fencing bronze in GCC Women's Games
Kuwait, October 22, 2019 – Qatar's Wadha Al Abdullah claimed the bronze medal of Epee fencing event at the sixth edition of GCC Women's Games 2019 which got underway in Kuwait on Sunday.Reem Al Shatti of Kuwait took the gold medal while Al Anoud Al Saadi of United Arab Emirates finished second.In Basketball event, Qatar defeated Saudi Arabia 63-41 while Qatar handball team eased past Kuwait 38-12 on Monday.On the other hand, Qatar's table tennis team will arrive in Kuwait on Tuesday while Qatar Taekwondo team will arrive in Kuwait on Wednesday.The sixth edition of Games is bringing together six GCC nations who are competing in 11 events.
Qatar defeat Saudi Arabia in Olympic qualifiers
Doha, October 22, 2019-Qatar defeated Saudi Arabia 29-20 in the Asian Men's Handball Qualification Tournament for Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday.It was Qatar's third straight victory and it helped them top Group A. Qatar will take on Group B runners up in the semifinals on Thursday.The tournament sees eight teams competing for a single ticket to the Tokyo Games.Qatar finished their group engagements with six points, from three wins over Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and India, to finish on top of Group A. Saudi Arabia are second from two victories.The champions of the tournament will receive a direct qualification for Olympics, while the second-placed team will have to compete in the playoffs next April.
Doha ready to host FINA Swimming World Cup
Doha, October 22, 2019-The Qatar Swimming Association (QSA) will organize the FINA Swimming World Cup 2019 next month at the Hamad Aquatic Centre, Aspire Zone.The competition, which will take place from November 7 to 9, will be the last meet of the FINA Swimming World Cup 2019 series, involving seven cities. It will be the eighth consecutive year for Doha to host a FINA Swimming World Cup event.The Qatari capital, home to the FINA World Swimming Championships in 2014, will also host the FINA World Aquatics Championships in 2023 – the sport's spotlight event.“Doha's presence since 2012 in the World Cup circuit has assuredly reinforced the visibility of this top-notch event in the Middle East region. After the successful staging of the 12th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Doha, the legacy of Swimming has continued in this part of the world," said FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione.The FINA Swimming World Cup 2019 series started in Tokyo (JPN) while Jinan (CHN) and Singapore (SGP) hosted the next two meets, forming cluster 1. Cluster 2 involved stops in Budapest (HUN) and Berlin (GER).The stop in Berlin, which was held from October 11 to 13, witnessed Dutchman Arno Kamminga surpassing Russia's Vladimir Morozov to win the second cluster.In the women's events, Australia's Cate Campbell surpassed Hungary's Katinka Hosszu to win the cluster, taking an overall lead in the series.Swimmers will come to Doha after competing in the Kazan (RUS) meet – the first stop of the third and final cluster – which will take place from November 1 to 3.Exciting races are on the cards in Doha, as it will showcase the cluster 3 winners and the overall winners. The overall winners of the series will receive $150,000.Morozov is ahead in the men's overall rankings in the series with 264 points, followed by Lithuania's Danas Rapsys with 177 points.USA's Andrew Michael is third with 132 points.Campbell is leading the women's overall rankings with a total of 243 points, followed by Hosszu with 240 points.Sweden's Michelle Coleman is third with 135 points.With much at stake, the Doha meet – one of the famous stops for swimmers – is expected to attract all the big names of the sport, apart from the leading swimmers of FINA Swimming World Cup 2019 series.Qatari swimmers will also take part in the home event after showing outstanding performances at the 27th GCC Aquatics Championships in Kuwait, where they clinched 34 medals including 17 gold, 10 silver and 7 bronze medals last month.
